You’ve most likely heard the unnerving news that Facebook is changing their newsfeed.

No? Well, aren’t you in for a surprise.

If you would like to read the full report you can access it here, but basically, Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, announced last week that we will soon see the Facebook newsfeed alter, where we can expect to see more content from our friends and family – people we care about – rather than a feed crammed with public content from businesses, news and other publishers.

You can view Mark’s full post here.

Now, your either having a panic attack, cheering with joy, or you couldn’t give a **** (in which case, this article isn’t much use for you). But hold your breath, we’re here to tell you why it’s not the end of the world for small businesses and their marketing. In fact, it’s kinda good news!

These changes have been put in place because Facebook’s research showed when we use social media to connect with people, we actually know and care about, it can be good for our overall wellbeing. I know what you’re thinking; Christmas with the in-laws was not good for your wellbeing, so how can this be so? But apparently it’s true. So once again, changes will be made to the algorithm and our newsfeed will be ranked favouring people we care about, as opposed to the current popularity rank of how many people react to, comment on or share a post to determine how high they appear in our newsfeed.

BUT, Facebook also revealed they will prioritise posts that ‘spark conversations’ between people. They want to make your time spent on social media more valuable by helping you find advantageous content and engage in more meaningful interactions.

Lets take a look at the facts:

  • Facebook already started making these changes last year (and we’re still alive and running);
  • The public content you see more will be held to the same standard, the only change is it should encourage more meaningful interactions;
  • It will take months for the entire process to kick in, giving you plenty of time to adapt your content to ensure you continue to reach your target audience – phew!

We can’t stress this enough: Facebook marketing and business content is not disappearing, IT’S CHANGING! And we think for the best. If your content generates communication with your target audience (something we already aim for in our campaigns), Facebook will favour your content above all else. Essentially, people who are interested in or want to hear about your brand, will.

If you have any concerns or questions about the recent Facebook announcement, please do not hesitate to contact one of our team’s social media experts to discuss. But in the meantime – here’s to a meaningful, highly connected, more valuable 2018. Cheers!
